Davis County Community,
Today, Friday April 17, 2020 Governor Kim Reynolds announced that all schools in Iowa will remain closed through the end of the school year to help prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
This announcement will affect all Davis County Community School District programming including all before- and after-school activities, all Spring athletic and extracurricular practices and competitions, and all weekend events. It is our hope that we will be able to reschedule prom and graduation for later this summer, or get creative with how we host these events, but we do not yet know exactly how these events will look. Our number one priority remains the health, safety, and security of all members in our community.
I know this decision to close all schools in Iowa will cause a great deal of concern and disappointment for our students, staff, and families. This pandemic arrived quickly and when we were first directed to close our school buildings in March, we did not realize it would be the last time we would see our students in person this school year. Please know that we share in your disappointment.
Per our district calendar, the last day of school for students is Thursday, May 28. We will continue with Voluntary Educational Enrichment Opportunities for Continuous Learning through May 28, just as we have over the past several weeks. We encourage all families to keep their students engaged in these learning activities to ensure that learning continues to take place through the end of the school year. Our staff remains ready to assist all families in these efforts.
We need our families’ support in engaging students in the learning resources we have provided. Continued participation in learning with the educational resources provided during this closure will assist strongly with educational success now and into the future. Our staff is here to help you with learning access in any way possible.
We will continue our school lunch services through the end of the school year as well. Currently, we are serving hundreds of meals per day and we will continue to do so. A plan will be put together and communicated later as it pertains to the Summer Lunch Program.
We know there will be many new questions and concerns in response to this latest announcement from Governor Reynolds. Look for future school communications as we develop details pertaining to our schools being closed for the remainder of the school year. Our administrative team will continue to work diligently to respond to all questions and concerns in a timely manner and this information will be posted and sent out through our school information and communication systems.
Once again, thank you for your patience, understanding, and flexibility during this unprecedented time. We will get through this together. Please continue to stay safe, practice social distancing, and remain at home as much as possible.
Sincerely,
Mr. Dan Maeder, Superintendent
