What better way to get feedback than to ask the young students, right here at Davis County Schools!? On Monday, our Creative Writing students visited kindergarten and second grade classrooms to read children's books which they have been working on for the past few weeks. The high school students read to several small groups of students and asked for feedback from their listeners. Sharing their stories with the younger students allowed them to put the finishing touches on their project. Through our Creative Writing course, students write poems, short stories, plays, news stories, comic strips, children's books, an autobiography and other types of writing that express creativity. Each month members from the Bloomfield Rotary Club visit each of our first grade classrooms. They read a story and then gift the book to the classroom library. The kids are very excited to have guest readers and enjoy the new stories they bring. We love this great connection with our community!

What if students could learn real life/money management skills starting at a young age!? With Mrs. Briley Slayton, they do just that. She has developed a Classroom Economy for her 3rd Graders. They get a paycheck every week which they can use to pay rent for their desk, buy school supplies and purchase fun items - shown in the cart. They are also charged fines or loaned money when necessary.

Mrs. Graves & Mrs. Van Mersbergen hosted a Book Tasting for their 3rd grade class! Students 'tasted' books from each genre. When 'tasting' a book they look at the title, Table of Contents, back cover, illustrations and then they read a small part of the book to see if they are interested in reading more of it. They record the title, author, genre and a little about the book on a trifold. After each genre has been sampled, they record the type of genre they are most interested in reading. What a fun idea, Mrs. Graves & Mrs. Van Mersbergen!

Many Davis County High School Alumni have inspiring careers to share. We've captured some of them and plan to share more throughout the year. Here's the first one from Deb Smith on her career at W. L. Gore (www.Gore.com/about). Thank you to those that have already responded. Any DCHS Alumni that wish to share their story with our students, please share here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfQgat1plmxt0DC2De6w3hnuyiFUdFTPp2MepUtQUrypZCyPw/viewform

1970	BA from N. Arizona University	Worked doing Research and Development for W.L. Gore & Associates in their Medical Division. Im retired now...
What inspired you to choose this pathway? W.L. Gore was a start up company when I interviewed with them and sounded so interesting. They had already invented an artificial artery that was hugely successful. It was their mission to better people's lives. In the 23 years i worked there many life enhancing products were taken from "ideas" to "realities" in the health field. It was exciting and gratifying to be a part of their team.
Have you had any career changes? What did you previously do? After Gore I worked the front desk at a Middle and High School. My husband and daughter both taught there. We all loved getting to know the students and following them as they graduated and went off to make their mark in the world.
Advice: Go see the world.... learn that it is a big place full of all kinds of people, of all different backgrounds and ways of thinking. Learn to accept the phrase, "know what you don't know". Think about how you could make our world a better place. The world needs creative, kind people. Find what you love to do....and go do it!
